The fouke monster

If Arkansas has a celebrity cryptid, then the Fouke Monster is certainly it. The Fouke Monster is purported to be an ape-like creature, similar to descriptions of Bigfoot, that was initially sighted in and around the southwest Arkansas town of Fouke during the early 1970s. The creature was alleged to have attacked a local family, and has since become a part of American and Arkansas folklore. Stories of the creature influenced the 1972 docudrama horror feature entitled The Legend of Boggy Creek, which became the 11th highest-grossing film of 1972 and is today considered to be a cult classic.

Is the Fouke Monster real? At the time of the sighting, SAU archeologist Frank Schambach determined that "There is a 99 percent chance the tracks are a hoax."

However, sightings have continued off and on throughout the years, and there are numerous sightings recorded across the border in Texas and Louisiana as well. If the Fouke Monster is real, it's most likely a regionalized adaptation of Bigfoot which has adapted to live in lowland swampy forests.

We will be gearing up for a major investigation of the Fouke Monster in the coming winter of 2022-2023, which is probably the safest time to be stalking around in the swamps and boggy woods of southwest Arkansas and eastern Texas. Hunting season will be over, alligators will be inactive, and snakes will be in their dens. We may do some preliminary investigations in late summer 2022, but we won't be full-bore until the weather cools off and the hunters are out of the woods.
